Model 1895 Cowboy vs Model 1894 Cowboy Rifles?
Looking at the Model 1895 Cowboy which shoots a 45/70 Gov’t. caliber bullet and Model 1894 Cowboy which is available in 45 Colt, 357 Mag. / 38 Spl.*, or 44 Mag. / 44Spl.caliber ammo both are Lever Action Rifles from Marlin and I want Pros and Cons for both rifles because i got information on both guns, but want more and other peoples opinions on these two beautiful rifles.
I want to use this rifle as a multi functioning rifle from target practice to taking it out hunting for everything from small game to large game like deer and elk
I plan to do a god deal of hunting with this rifle and a little target practicing when big games not in season
Since I do Cowboy Action Shooting, I have both rifles. Mine are Marlins.
The 45-70 is a heavy gun. Very reliable. Since I’m using iron sights with old eyes, I suspect the rifle is more accurate than I am shooting it. Stick a decent scope on it and you will have a pretty decent hunting gun for most big game. I have found the 325 gr. loads comfortable to shoot. The 405 gr. stuff can rock your world with recoil. A buddy of mine, using my rifle with his much younger eyes, routinely hits the 500 yard gong. So the rifle will do some nice target work.
The other cowboy lever action is in 45 Long Colt. Decent accuracy out to 100 yards, again with iron sights. Remember this is a handgun round, so I would not recommend this for much beyond coyotes. This is my favorite plinking rifle. The .46 LC, 255 gr. round barely recoils in the rifle. Just plain fun to shoot. Black powder loads are a real hoot; big bang, lots of smoke, stinks to high heaven. . ., great fun.
I sold my .44 mag. lever action to my Step Son. I had a 4 power shotgun scope on it. Dead on out to 150 yards. He’s taken a couple deer with it. Says it is the best brush gun he’s ever had.
