John Henry ("Fitz") FitzGerald worked for Colt from 1918 till 1944. Shooting, originally published in 1930, was the culmination of Fitzas work in the firearms field. In it he discusses his work with law enforcement and the courts, his theories and practices about practical shooting of the "one hand gun" and his thoughts about target and exhibition shooting, hunting and home defense. This was the only book FitzGerald ever wrote, but his life was clearly dedicated to all aspects of handgun shooting. While his written work might be unfamiliar to some of you, those who are reading this work for the first time should be very familiar with the writings of Elmer Keith, Charles Askins Jr., Ashley Haines and Chauncey Thomas. All these men were friends of FitzGerald and thought highly of his methods and approach. After reading this book, you will feel the same way. Paladin is pleased to add this long-out-of-print volume by one of Americaas most renowned and colorful shooters to its Combat Classics library. The new forewords by FitzGerald scholars Timothy J. Mullin and Kevin Williams, as well as the addition of a number of never-before published photos, shed new light on FitzGerald the man and the shooter.

Monte Hellman reinvents the Western genre with THE SHOOTING, a cryptic tale of revenge that has become an underground masterpiece of existentialism. The story follows Willett Gashade (Warren Oates), an ex-bounty hunter who returns home searching for his brother, only to discover that he has disappeared. He is met by Coley (Will Hutchins), a frazzled cowboy who is recovering from having witnessed the murder of his best friend. When a beautiful but tempestuous mystery woman (Millie Perkins) arrives, Gashade reluctantly agrees to escort her through the Utah desert. Along the way, Gashade begins to suspect that she is trailing someone, which is confirmed after Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson), a ruthless bounty hunter, joins the party. Unsure of their target, Gashade and Coley continue to inch forward, leery of Billy Spear’s menacing presence. When Gashade finally discovers the hunted victim, he is left stunned and bewildered. Hellman’s subversive, enigmatic tale, shot concurrently with RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND, assures the director a place in Western history. Nicholson and Oates, who appear in almost all of Hellman’s early films, slip into their roles with the ease and smoothness that has turned them into acting legends, giving cinephiles yet another reason to call THE SHOOTING an unadulterated classic.

Gunsmoke and Saddle Leather: Firearms in the Nineteenth-Century American West

Gunsmoke and Saddle Leather: Firearms in the Nineteenth-Century American West

$64.98

The gun, like the axe and the plow, was an essential tool in the exploration and settlement of the trans-Mississippi West. It provided food for the cooking pot as well as protection against two- or four-legged marauders. As the century progressed, firearms also provided various forms of recreation for both men and women, primarily target and competition shooting. Of course the employment of the gun, whether for good or evil, depended upon the user. The men and women who lived the nineteenth-century western experience sometimes described in detail the role firearms played in their lives. Such accounts included a trapper in the 1830s, a woman crossing the plains by wagon in the 1850s, a drover (cowboy in modern terminology) enduring the dangers of a long cattle drive, a professional hunter engaged in the slaughter of the once seemingly endless herds of bison, or a soldier campaigning against American Indians. Each account adds to our knowledge of firearms and our awareness of the struggle faced by those who were a part of the western experience. "Gunsmoke and Saddle Leather" describes the guns impact on the lives of those in the Westmen and women, whites and American Indiansusing their own words to tell that story wherever possible.
